Description

Dame Ellen Patricia MacArthur is a pioneering systems thinker and circular economy advocate whose journey from world-record-breaking sailor to transformational innovator demonstrates the power of lived experience to reshape global thinking about resource management and economic systems. On February 7, 2005, MacArthur broke the world record for the fastest solo circumnavigation of the globe, an achievement that profoundly shaped her understanding of planetary boundaries. During her solitary voyage, she experienced directly what it meant to manage finite resources in a closed system—the fundamental principle that would inspire her foundation's work on circular economy transformation.

Recognizing the parallels between the finite resources on her sailboat and the finite resources of planet Earth, MacArthur founded the Ellen MacArthur Foundation in 2009 (publicly launched September 2, 2010) to promote circular economy principles globally. The foundation has emerged as one of the world's most influential organizations in advancing the circular economy framework, working with Fortune 500 companies, policymakers, educators, and civil society to fundamentally reshape how economic systems operate. Rather than the traditional linear "take-make-dispose" model, MacArthur champions a regenerative circular economy that mimics natural systems—where waste becomes input, products are designed for longevity and recovery, and biological and technical nutrients circulate continuously.

MacArthur's work has gained extraordinary global recognition and impact. The Ellen MacArthur Foundation was named a 2023 Champion of the Earth for Inspiration and Action, one of the United Nations' highest environmental honors. Her foundation has catalyzed significant initiatives addressing some of humanity's most pressing challenges, including a US$2 million prize fund launched in 2017 with the Prince of Wales' International Sustainability Unit for innovations in plastic waste management. Through her speaking, writing, and foundation work, MacArthur has successfully elevated circular economy thinking from academic concept to mainstream business and policy practice.
