Description

International IDEA is an intergovernmental organization established in 1995 by 14 founding Members at a conference held in Stockholm on February 27th. The organization works to support and strengthen democratic institutions and processes around the world, developing sustainable, effective, and legitimate democracies. International IDEA advances, promotes, and protects sustainable democracy worldwide in consideration of human rights commitments through policy-relevant knowledge, capacity development, advocacy, and the convening of dialogues. It provides high-quality capacity development and training on democracy-building and reform processes and serves as an impartial and trusted democracy assistance provider facilitating dialogues on democratic reform.

As of 2024, the organization comprises 35 Member States and operates across key areas of expertise including constitution-building processes, electoral processes, political parties, democracy and gender, and democracy assessments. International IDEA launched the Global State of Democracy (GSoD) Initiative in 2016, which provides evidence-based, balanced analysis and data on the state and quality of democracy for 173 countries across the world.
