Description

Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is India's revolutionary real-time payment system operated by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). Launched in 2016, UPI has transformed India's digital payments landscape by enabling instant peer-to-peer and person-to-merchant transactions through a unified interface. As of 2025, UPI processes over 13 billion monthly transactions and serves more than 350 million individuals and 50 million merchants, representing 50% of the world's digital transaction volume.

UPI operates as an open, interoperable infrastructure built on top of the Immediate Payment Service (IMPS), regulated by the Reserve Bank of India. The platform enables seamless fund transfers between any two bank accounts using only a unique UPI ID, accessible through mobile devices. This architecture has democratized digital payments across India's diverse population, supporting direct benefit transfers that have saved the government an estimated $41 billion.

Beyond India's borders, UPI has expanded internationally through memorandums of understanding with Antigua & Barbuda, Armenia, Sierra Leone, Suriname, and ongoing negotiations with Kenya, Rwanda, and Mozambique. This global expansion positions UPI as a key model for digital public infrastructure in developing economies.
